LETTER TO THE EDITOR BSA BAN ON GAYS
Dear Lucy In all my 85 years, I have never responded to a newspaper article; butI I must say that I whole-heartedly agree with your take on the Boy Scout controversy. (Vol. 4, No. 33 – “Opinion - Leave them alone - go start your own”) The LGBT has the right to organize their Gay Boys group, but what is gay about being an “abomination” to God? George Boyd Correction/Clarification In the February 8 - 14, 2013 edition of White Rock Lake Weekly ...

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Mamma wants a 'Slow Ride.' And to 'Take it easy'
OMG! (FYI. If you’re as unhip as I am – that’s 21st Century speak for “Oh, my, God!”) I shudder to think about how, as a teenager, I’d listen to the band Foghat blaring on whoever-was-driving-at-the-time’s car radio while riding without a seatbelt in the backseat. Could we really have been so irresponsible? But, gosh darn it, we had a good time, didn’t we class of ’82? God bless us, everyone! I am so thankful I lived through those teenage time...

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Clause
LETTER TO THE EDITOR We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of The Sun: Dear Editor— I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus? Virginia O’Hanlon 115 W. Ninety-Fifth St. NOTE F...

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Could’a, Should’a, Would’a!
“Back up! Back up! Back up!” No, I’m not screaming to another driver. But I am talking about drives. Silly me. I thought I could fix my minor computer glitch myself. So I set out on Monday to do just that. I work on a Mac and our computer guy was flying out of town. But I felt brave enough to attempt to finally make an Adobe PDF print on one of our printers, something we haven’t been able to do since a “suggested upgrade” recently. FYI – If I ...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Drunk Driving
Dear Editor Please help save Texans’ lives by spreading this life-saving message – Stop Football Game Day Drinking and Driving. From the first game in August through the Super Bowl finale, watching football is a national pastime, especially in Texas where professional, college and high school teams drive Texans “football crazy.” The results of game day drinking can be seen in the growing number of post-game traffic accidents and fatalities. Kn...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Hope for the USO
Hi, Nancy, I enjoyed your letter about the USO and had the good fortune to see Bob Hope and other performers (in person instead of on TV) while in the Army. I also took advantage of some USO organized events while on R&R from Vietnam to Australia in 1969–a trip to the zoo, picnic, boat ride, cook out and horseback riding. Please provide me with a local address near White Rock where I can drop off some travel-sized toiletry items for the USO to...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Free Enterprises
Dear Editor: The White Rock Lake Weekly of August 10 (Vol. 4, No. 9) had a great article on American “exceptionalism.” A small Vietnamese child comes to America and accomplishes the “American Dream” and accepts this in a manner that is without any kind of boasting or bragging. Khanh Nguyen gets a law degree, gets great jobs, learns how to write computer programs and ends up cooking in his own restaurant for a living! He is the classic example...

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: LOVES EAST DALLAS, TOO!
Re: Letter from the Managing Editor (Vol. 4, No. 2, June 22-28, 2012) Dear Katie: You hit so much of why I love East Dallas in your op-ed today. I know my neighbors. Last night, the doorbell rang and Betty was bringing us a bag of home grown tomatoes and cucumbers. This morning, as I walked one of my dogs, my neighbor Leslie joined me for a mile long lap. On my next lap, my neighbor Larry pulled up on his bike to say hi and to gossip a b...

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: LOVE LIVES ON
Dear Nancy, Love is Golden – There are years – and then there's THE year, 1962. This is a remembrance and celebration of Rolando and Angie Lozano’s 50th Wedding Anniversary. The year was 1962 – fifty years ago, which seems like it was yesterday. There were some great events in history, like John Glenn orbiting the Earth. It was also the year of the Beatles, and the mighty Hulk made his debut in 1962. Think about how long 50 years is! Now the t...

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: SAVE OUR SCHOOLS
Dear Nancy, This letter is in response to the recent article titled “Emotions run high over parking plans” [White Rock Lake Weekly, Vol. 3, No 47]. As many readers may be aware, emotions of concern and disappointment also are running high in the Jubilee Park Community, regarding Dallas ISD's plans to remove families and place a parking lot interspersed with homes and open, treeless lots, or in other words, creating a checkerboard community. ...

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: GORGEOUS GLASS
Dear WRLW: Perhaps because I am an artist, or just because I’m human, tonight (Thursday, May 17) was a night I will treasure forever in East Dallas! Ironically it comes just after the battle over Winfrey Point – one, which as a resident of the Lake area, I am so grateful it was settled as it was. This night brought all senses alive as I came into the gardens from the Northern end. Immediately past the entry, sunlight was catching the dozens ...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: MORE WOES
Dear Nancy: Every weekend recently it seems we cannot get in or out of our homes or our neighborhood. Last weekend, there was an obstruction getting off Lakeshore. This weekend it was even worse as the whole neighborhood was restricted. Where is the balance in the public interest for homeowners, who pay higher property taxes because of the proximity to White Rock Lake, to accommodate those from other Metroplex subdivisions and indeed from far ...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Work Together
May 7, 2012 Mr. Brian Shivers Dallas Arboretum Chairman of the Board 5600 W. Lovers Ln., #227 Dallas, TX 75209 Dear Chairman Shivers: I am deeply concerned that the Arboretum’s standing in the community is taking a decidedly negative turn. A number of the community leaders in the surrounding neighborhoods have already organized an anti-parking campaign. This effort is likely to cast the Arboretum as the enemy of the White Rock Lake Park ...

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: WHAT CENTURY IS IT ANYWAY?
Dear WRLW: The times, they are a'changing–and not for the better. These are perilous times for women in Texas. Due to a political power play, in the last legislative session, 300,000 Texas women lost their access to cancer screenings, mammograms, and preventative care. The trans-vaginal sonogram, an invasive, expensive, and medically unnecessary procedure is now mandatory before legally terminating a pregnancy. For a woman facing the hardest...

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: ALL OUR CHILDREN ARE STAARS
Dear WRLW: Reading your STAAR Test article (Vol. 3, No. 41, “I pro-test the Lone STAAR State”) brought me back to my younger years. As a student I made above average grades, but worked hard for them. I understand test anxiety. My daily scores on homework assignments, small tests and projects are where I excelled. Major tests for the semester or year were terrifying to me and my test anxiety kicked in. The fear would make my mind go blank and ...
