Janie Autz (pictured above), a volunteer at the English Language Ministry (ELM), was recognized by Lakewood Service League as its 2012 Service Hero at its annual gala on Feb. 11 at Union Station. The service hero is one who goes above and beyond the requirements of volunteer service at one of its East Dallas partner organizations. As a volunteer tutor at ELM, Autz teaches English as a Second Language to East Dallas residents, primarily women. ELM director Ellen Mata said: “Janie has a tremendous sense of optimism and energy. She has worked endlessly to serve her students, and to support and promote ELM.” Autz has served on the ELM Board of Directors for 10 years, currently as president. She also serves as board secretary for East Dallas Community Organization, board president of Fowler Christian Apartments at Juliette Fowler Homes, and is on the board of elders at East Dallas Christian Church. Lakewood Service Leagues is committed to community service and partners with more than thirty East Dallas Organizations through volunteering or providing funds.
