Left to right, Whitney Hennen as Ulla, Brian Hathaway as Leo Bloom and B.J. Cleveland as Max Bialystock leave the audience wanting more of “The Producers” with Uptown Players at Kalita Humphrey Theater through September 15.
It’s springtime in Uptown for 'The Producers'
To understate, B.J. Cleveland gave Nathan Lane a run for his money as Max Bialystock in Uptown Players’ “The Producers.” Don’t look for overstatements here. This is a must-see. Matthew Broderick could also learn a thing or two from Brian Hathaway as Leo Bloom. Hathaway opened as the nerdy accountant, and then made the transition to the nerdy producer without a hitch. This is Uptown Players debut for Hathaway. He has appeared locally in produc...

John O’Hurley plays Billy Flynn in the musical “Chicago.”
THEATER REVIEW O’Hurley razzle dazzles ’em in ‘Chicago’
Traditionally, when Bob Fosse creates a show, it is exceptional. When Fosse collaborates with Fred Ebb on the book and lyrics, and John Kander on music, it’s out of this world. The magic happened with “Chicago,” which opened its two-week run at the Winspear Opera House to a packed house Tuesday night. “Packed house” is an understatement, as every tier of the spectacular theater, in addition to orchestra seating appeared to be sold out. The ens...

Cathy Rigby returns to the Dallas Summer Musicals for a fourth and final performance.
THEATER REVIEW Rigby soars into families’ hearts again at Dallas Summer Musicals
Cathy Rigby is back in town, spreading her fairy dust at Dallas Summer Musicals’ “Peter Pan,” which opened Tuesday and will play through July 22. Rigby takes flight in this new production that is as magical as we’ve come to expect of this two-time, Tony award-nominated adventure. The word from Never Never Land is that, as the little boy who never wants to grow up, Rigby is at the top of her pretending game. Indeed, she lives up to the claim. ...

Marianne Galloway, Diane Casey Box and Jenae Yerger-Glanton are hilarious at Contemporary Theatre through July 25.
THEATER REVIEW Contemporary cast take Henley̓s ̔Crime̓ to heart
Being nuts doesn’t usually get you far in life. But if, as an actor, you’re convincing at being nuts, then you just may be going far. Diane Casey Box, Marianne Galloway, Jenae Yerger-Glanton and Whitney Holotik take being nuts to a whole new level in Contemporary Theatres’ (CT) production of “Crimes of the Heart.” Three pre-middle aged sisters in the small town of Hazelhurst, Miss. in 1974 endure life’s little kicks in the pants while competi...

“South Pacific” at the Granville Arts Center in Garland stars Brian Mathis, Morgan Mabry Mason and features Marjorie Hayes and Terrence McEnroe.
Stellar cast brings 'South Pacific' to life in Garland
When Morgan Mabry Mason sings her first note as a “Cockeyed Optimist” in scene one of the classic “South Pacific,” this Nellie Forbush sets the bar really high at Garland Summer Musicals’ (GSM) “South Pacific.” She gives Mitzi Gaynor a run for her money – not so much with her dancing, but definitely with her singing. Hers is a voice you would like to hear as Dolly Levi, Fanny Brice and Eliza Doolittle. But, wait a minute. Here’s Brian Mathis a...
